SHAF Arts Trail’

The South Hams Arts Forum’s Arts Trail is a well-established annual event that showcases an extensive range of artwork created by local South Hams artists.

The Trail provides a rare opportunity for members of the public to meet artists in a variety of venues, whether it be within artists’ own homes, their working studios, or in established galleries and public venues such as the old Market Hall in Kingsbridge.

October 2021 saw a total of 39 SHAF artists showcase their work, mainly clustering in these areas: Kingsbridge, Modbury, Loddiswell and Newton Ferrers/Noss Mayo. I joined 4 other artists to put on a show in a dedicated room above the café at Avon Mill Garden Centre near Loddiswell.

After hanging our work and setting up the product/gifts displays, (jewellery by Fiona Cocks, Linen textiles by MakersLane and illustrated gifts by Tor Allen), we set about strategic placement of follow the arrow ‘ARTS TRAIL’ road signs and even more direction signs within the garden centre to encourage people upstairs.

We shared the stewarding duties and all agreed it really is a very rewarding experience to have interested members of the public - and indeed other artists - take the time to ask questions and discuss the work on view. When they then buy the piece that has grabbed their attention, it makes all the effort to put on such a show very satisfying and worth it indeed!
